AC problem - Hot/Cold air coming out on different vents on the same time

S70 120k miles, non-turbo

With the ac on, I get Hot air coming off the driver's side vent and Cold air coming off the passenger side vents on the same time. To my understanding the blend motors are malfunctioning. For a short period of time the ac fixed itself. Now the problem is back. I need help to find where the blend motors are.

Thank you in advance.

AC problem - Hot/Cold air coming out on different vents on the same time

I experience something similar. The air temperature sensor on the driver side was cloughed with linen debris. In the sensor there is a small helice and it is stopping to run giving false reading to the system. It is behing a small grill with a hole on switchs row, it is the one further to the right near the ECC unit. Try to remove debris with a vacumm cleaner from the front it can save the diassembly. Good luck!

DGM, thank you for your input. Could you, or anyone else, to elaborate more detail the temparature sensor,ECC unit, and switch row? Is the ECC the control panel where you the knobs to hot and cold?

The ac worked again for awhile. When the ac was running properly, I turned off the ac button and turned the fan full blast to rid of the remaining moisture off the fins. All of a sudden, the driver side vent switched to hot air. Once I turned the fan full blast with the ac working properly and the driver's side vents changed to hot air while the passenger continues to blow cold air.

I think you're probably right about the problem - they're usually called "damper motors" and there are five of them altogether. There are two on the driver's side, sort of where your right knee is when you drive. You can get to them by removing the trim under the driver's dash and the plastic panel on the side of the center instrument panel. Similarly for three motors on the passenger side, but you have to remove the glovebox too and the three motors are sort of scattered about.

Get a Haynes manual, the damper motor system is kind of complicated, if you put in a new one you have to program your ECU to know where the ends of the motor's range are.

EV11, thank you so much for your guidance on this matter. I have the Chilton's manual and I do not see the damper motors on the index so your input is so valuable. At least now I have something to go by. I will need to look into it in the next few days and see if there is something that I could fiddle with. If not,I may just go ahead and take it to the dealer. Perhaps it just needs calibration and not a new motor.

        Again, thanks!
