timing belt replacement - to remove or not to remove the crank pulley V70-XC70 1998

Hello volvo forum,
I am new to the forum. I am the original owner of 1998 V70 T5M. I am just now starting to do some work on the car myself. (I have always done my own oil and brakes.) I just rolled over 140,000 on the odometer so I am about to replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc.

The DVD from IPD says to remove the crank pulley before removing the timing belt. However the instructions on the volvospeed.com website say it is not absolutely necessary to remove it. I know from some of the posts I've read that some of you have done this job on your own. I am hoping to aviod renting an impact wrench just for that darn crank nut. I already tried loosening it with a breaker bar while someone pushed the brakes for me, but that got nowhere. I am also assuming that once I get the crank nut off, the pulley is still a b*tch to get off. So what's the verdict, should I try to work around the crank pulley, or get the thing off before removing the timing belt?
