Oil Filter 850

I heard a rumor that the Volvo oil filter has some type of valve in it? Is this true? I have a Volvo specialist in Oklahoma and his rates are great but is just kind of a pain going to him or the dealer to drop the car off for the day for an oil change....thinking a quick lube would be easier.

Thanks,
John

the valve in the filter is designed to open when your filter gets clogged up, thus keeping the flow of oil to engine. nothing else.

Quick lube??? 850

You mean those 16 year old kids who can misthread an aluminum oil pan in seconds? Or overfill you engine? They also "check" the air filter and top up fluids. Nice service, right?
They do not use the correct antifreeze.
They do not put the airfilter back correctly. Which can effect tha AMM, and a host of other things.
NEVER let them put tranny fluid in your car.
They automatically put your tire pressure at 40.

Why not change the oil yourself? Order 10 Mann filters and crush washers. Then when it comes time to change the oil, loosen the 16mm screw, put the pan underneath, pull out the screw, and let it flush for about 15 minutes. Unscrew the the filter, put on a new one, put a new crush washer on the pan screw and close it up. Add 5 quarts of oil, start the car and turn it off, and top off the oil. Including the wait time, it takes 30 minutes and you know it is done right.

Use Mann filters IMHO. You may find this link helpful also:

The author covers most all of the common brand filters out there. As you can see, most of them are (1) junk and (2)made by your guess is as good as anyone elses. Oil filters are sorta like the government...companies farm them out to whoever will make them the cheapest. Mopar filters for example, are made by at least 3-4 companies who just stick the Mopar name on them.

This is true. Volvo oil filters are manufactured by Mann-Hummel. I dont know the actual technical term but they do have a valve that prevents the oil from draining back into the filter when the engine is switched off. This keeps the oil in the upper cylinder & valve area where its needed upon start-up. You can order a pack of 10 from fcpgroton.com for about $35.00. Theyre the exact same as the filters the dealer will sell you except they have the green "MANN" logo as opposed to the blue "VOLVO" logo. They also have the aluminum crush washers for your drain plug for like 10 cents each.

I fail to see how the small amount of oil draining into the oil filter which is at the bottom of the engine has anything to do with upper cylinder and valve lubrication. The best thing for that is synthetic, which clings to metal surface long after the engine is shut off--far better than dyno oil.

I agree....it is a minimal amount of oil. I dont know, I guess my faith in MANN filters is solely based on the fact that Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche etc....use them as their O.E. supplier.

From what I have heard this was more important on engines having the filter on the side where the oil could drain out e.g. B-18, 20 23 and 230. The valve just prevents the filter from emptying into the sump. In the white engines it can't go anywhere, so there is no real problem.

Synthetic all the way!!

I wouldn't trust the monkeys at a quicklube...get yourself a pair of ramps from Autozone and do it yourself. They also sell various brand oil filters that fit the 850--your Volvo specialist is blowing smoke about a special filter.

Doing an oil and filter change yourself takes 20 minutes tops and you can use Mobil 1 Synthetic (get it at Wallmart) without getting ripped of at the oil change places. I also use the Mobil 1 Oil Filter.

I disagree...filters do make a difference. The Mann is what I buy in the case because it has the valve in it...a few others do, but not sure exactly which. I have read over and over to avoid Fram filters if you have to use some other brand. I have an oil change down to 10 minutes and use Mobil-1 Synthetic every 5K miles. Buy the Rhino ramps and learn to do it yourself. I do this because I don't trust anyone at any quicky place and I can inspect my cv joints and other items, like the turbo return line while I'm under the car, and also because I only have weekends to do anything with my car...I'm busy during the week and on weekends, most places are closed around here.
