when change fluid change 2001 V70 T5 4(5?) speed auto trans?

Just went in for my 95,000 service. Asked to have the trans fluid changed. Dealer said is a special fluid, Volvs feels is better than synthetic and don't recommend changing until it "looks bad". I explained thinking of many BBers should be done every 30K miles or so. He went on to say it costs ~ $450 and they typically find need to change at ~150K miles.

Is this true for my trans? I've been trying to be very thorough on maintenance and courious how long I can drive this car. Right now, looks/runs as good as day I got it.

    You can do it yourself. The Volvo 3309 Transmission fluid is the same as Mobil-3309 ATF. Find where they sell the Mobil and buy it...you'll need at least 12 quarts to do a flush correctly, but it will be much cheaper than Volvo. You do the flush the same way it's done on 850's and '98 S/V/XC/C 70's. If you can't do it, then find an indy shop that will. $450 for a flush is ridiculous. By the way, your car is a 5 speed (has a 4 under the D on the gear shift). The D on your gear shift is the auto-5.
