850 T5 Head Gasket 850 1996

Hi All,

Have blown the head gasket on my '96 T5 Auto estate (209000 miles)

Has anyone done this job? I've had to purchase a temopary replacement, as my dealer is talking about 15 hours labour !! Is it really that bad? If I do it myself will I need any special tools? Any hints or tips? Should I just buy another lump and get that fitted ?

In desperation

Keith

I think parts of the head are actually glued together. IMO -- I'd just find a good, lower-mileage motor, there should be piles of 'em around. (In fact, the entire engine can't be as bad as the head gasket. I've done an engine before albeit not on a FWD Volvo. If I actually had time I might try it. But I think I'd shoot myself before trying to do a head gasket on one of these.) At 209k you don't know what shape the bottom end is in and I'd guess it's not as good as it was well, as it was 209k ago. What's the point of doing the head gasket if the bottom end is going to go in another 20k miles?

The 850 doesn't have a head gasket per se. They roll on a sealant goo and I'm told it takes a fair amount of care and skill, so it is not really a typical DIY job. Others here may have done it themselves, though.

Yes I've replaced one just a few weeks ago. Second the head is split in two parts, the upper and lower sections. The upper section uses a sealant / liquid gasket, but the lower half has a standard type head gasket.

Its not all that tough but you wiil need a few tools to set the cams and reset the head. I have the tool kit I purchased and used up for sale in the classified section. Its not cheap $490 but Baum tools wants $795 if you purchase direct. The tool is worth every penny. Aligns the cams and presses the upper part of the head in proper fashion so as to avoid damaging the cam journels.

My 98 T5 has been great since the new headgasket.
