Turboing an 850? 850

Ok, maybe I ought to ask this over at Turbobricks, but...

What's involved in turboing an 850? I have a 1995 850, auto tranny, base model. It's a slug. No light-pressure turbo, just 5 cylinders and 4 gears of mush.

I have to do the exhaust manifold, engine mounts, and timing belt very soon, so I'll already have half the engine out.

So since I'm already junkyard diving for a manifold, I figured what the hey maybe I'll turbo the sucker if it doesn't look TOO insane.

So, thoughts? Suggestions? Flames because I'm crazy? Have at it!

Gurm, your first instinct was right! Go to turbo bricks and search the info first, then politely ask questions of them. All you're gonna get here is a bunch of crochety farts who don't have the imagination for this sort of undertaking. Do you want argue indefinately about synthetic versus dino oil? Instruction on replacing a signal bulb?? Then this board is perfect for that! Hundreds of conversions like this are discussed in detail (with great pictures might I add) on turbobricks with statisfactory results! Since You're gonna take the engine out anyways I would highly reccomend it! Sure it's time consuming and it does involve WORK, but is anything that's worth a darn just given away or easy? NO. You definantely sound like the type of fellow who can accomplish this with no prob whatsoever. Have fun with it... :)

You might find someone on e-bay willing to sell you all the parts. It may be just a valve body difference but I believe even the turbo transmissions are different.

Way too much work. The Turbo motor is a different motor all together, with forged pistons and rods. You would be better off selling what you have and finding a true factory Turbo model. They're all over the place and pretty cheap.

I've also heard that it is not worth the money or time, but there are people who do it. One guy I do know of is on Turbobricks - its been awhile so I can't remember the name, but he's running insane numbers. And, if you picked up the car for nothing, it might be worthwhile doing a couple of upgrades for minor fun. I ended up "settling" on a 850Non Turbo - I've done a complete 3" exhaust and K&N intake to bring the numbers a little higher and its made the car alot more fun to drive (not first gear though).

I guess its all in what you're willing to spend, but most poeple here will think its a waste of money and time. But I'd say the same thing to Volvo for putting a Turbo in a FWD car in the first place.
