Test for AMM V70-XC70 1998

Is there a way to test an AMM other than unplugging it to see if it will idle better? My V70 started running very erraticly yesterday. It ran like new for a few miles then ran as if it was in limp mode, stumbling and stalling. It ran at top RPM of about 1500 and 25 MPH then fine again. I unplugged the AMM and it idles and revs with no problem. I have not had the CEL codes read yet as I am leery of driving it to have the codes pulled. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you unplug the MAF sensor (I suppose that's what you're calling a AMM), and things are fine, then your MAF IS bad and you should buy a new one. You can try cleaning it (don't touch the sensor, not even with a q-tip) with contact cleaner but most of the time, that's only a temporary solution at best.

Thanks, guys. I just got back from having the CEL code read. It came back P0102 and also said low voltage MAF or VAF. It ran fine with it unplugged so I guess I'll replace it.

unplugging the AMM puts the car in "limp mode", thus the car idles bad when the AMM is unplugged.

So if unplugging it in your car does ot do any thing to the idle, then that AMM is bad.

I agree the AMM is bad and that it goes into limp-mode when unplugged, but unplugging it also gives it a stable idle. If plugged back in and the idle is terrible or the car dies, that's a good sign that the sensor is bad. I had the exact same thing happen to my car last Dec. and replacing the sensor made everything work correctly again. Before that, the car bucked shook and wouldn't drive right...it also spewed foul exhaust while it was doing this.
