Test for AMM V70-XC70 1998

Is there a way to test an AMM other than unplugging it to see if it will idle better? My V70 started running very erraticly yesterday. It ran like new for a few miles then ran as if it was in limp mode, stumbling and stalling. It ran at top RPM of about 1500 and 25 MPH then fine again. I unplugged the AMM and it idles and revs with no problem. I have not had the CEL codes read yet as I am leery of driving it to have the codes pulled. Any suggestions? Thanks.
