Crankcase ventilation and CV boots 850

Have two questions about a 96 850 non-turbo.

First: If the crankcase ventilation system gets clogged up would you notice the engine smoke slightly after long idle periods (5 minutes or more)? All compressions are good, but if I sit more than five minutes at idle, when I accelerate I get oil smoke then it burns off and no more smoke. No smoke on cold start. Also I have been losing oil recently with no noticeable smoke while driving and no leaks. (I park in the same spot every night and no leaks at all)

Second: Outer CV boot on passenger side has just split - can the boot be replaced or is it joint replacement time?

Thank you.

Oliver

When the boot cracks, it is easier and better to just replace the whole joint.

If this car is a turbo, check the oil return line. Because it smokes after long idling, I suspect that oil is dripping on the exhaust pipe, close to the firewall.
The oil separator probably needs to be cleaned out and the pipes unplugged.

Oops, just noticed, non-turbo. Clean the separator anyway.

I believe you can loosen the valve cover cap while the engine is running to check for any excessive internal pressure. The cap shouldn't jump around much at all. You may have some worn valve guides which would generally not affect compression too much.
