Loud clunk when shifting into reverse 850

Frequently , my '95 850 Turbo makes a loud clunking noise when I put it into reverse. Sometimes the shift is baby smooth. This naturally has me a little concerned. Could it be that the turbo is at a higher rev rate and takes time to wind down -(that makes no sense whatever but it's the best I can figure out, me not being a mechanic)

Any suggestions and thanx for any help.

MIJ gave you a good thing to think about - changing your fluid. The procedure is pretty easy - IIRC, you disconnect a hose near the battery (at least on my turbo), and put the end in a gallon container below the car. Start the car, and let it pump a quart or quart and a half out (NO MORE than that at one time). Turn off, add new fluid to where the dipstick is, and repeat. Do this for as many quarts as it holds (I think 9 or so). The fluid that comes out will eventually run clear as the old fluid is flushed. Replace the hose and you are done. The hardest part is getting the clamp undone that holds the hose on the transmission cooler. In my case I had to rock the clamp back and forth a bit to undo some corrosion between the nipple and the clamp. There is a little clip that prevents the clamp from coming off the transmission cooler (you flex it to get the hose off). Flex this carefully so you can reattach the hose without trouble. This is all from memory - there are a few procedures (with variations) on the internet - maybe Volvospeed. Some suggest the fancy machine the shops have, but a lot of people just flush using this method. Good luck, Don

I believe you're talking about the transmission cooler lines. But do you disconnect the top one or the bottom one? And which one is the intake and which one is the return? Do you have to do this while the engine is hot (that's when the manual recommends adding fluid)? Lastly, instead of shutting your car off nine times could you just add fluid one quart after another (in keeping with the pump out) while the car is running and pumping the old fluid out?

It could be that the center top engine support bushing is in need of replacement. Remember to come to a complete stop before shifting to reverse or from reverse to drive. The 850 tranny will die quickly of the car is moving even a little bit while shifting.

When is the last time you flushed your transmission with new ATF?
The turbo has nothing to do with your problem.
