MAF Sensor bad??? 850 1994

My car started running poorly, no power, spitting and sputtering. I read the codes and found 121 Mass Air Flow (MAF) signal missing or faulty. I disconnected it and the car ran pretty good down the road but won't idle. Is there any way to clean these sensors before I spend the money to get a new one? Would this sensor also be the culprit for my gas mileage going from 26 to 13 and the slight smell of rotten eggs?

    MAF Sensor bad??? 850 1994

Hey there, I'm not a smart gear-head like the others on brick board, but a few years ago I had to replace the MAF sensor in my 95 850. Apparently the fuel mixture was wrong and causing the catalytic converter to overheat thus causing the sulfur rotten egg smell. After replacing that MAF, I believe that fixed the problem. I think the car was also belching purple smoke during hard acceleration and down shifts.

Just wanted to let you know, it was my experience that I did NOT need a new cat, but also the MAF is a very expensive part.

I have had the same problem with my 94 850. It had a very erratic idle. Read article in Popular Mechanics about a cleaner that is put out by CRC to clean MAF sensors in order to correct these problems. I was not able to find the cleaner so I did a little reach on the web and found that Radio Shack had a spray cleaner for electronics. I picked that up and used it, I have forgotten the name but it was a white spray can with a brush attachment on the nozzle. I did not use the brush on MAF filament, as it would damage it. I took the MAF out of the air intake and spray it down with cleaner several times, let it dry and put it back in, worked like a charm. The MAF filament on mine was very dirty and hence causing it to send an erratic signal. Hope this helps

The sulphur smell comes from unburned gas going through the cat. You are obviously overrich and using high sulphur gasoline.
The MAF sensor contacts do need cleaning with electric contact cleaner and a tooth brush. And deffinately check the accordion part of the intake hose for leaks. Even little ones will cause big problems.
Alsway do the cheaper fixes first, then order a new MAF.

Two things come to mind that might not be MAF...

The flexible hose for MAF to throttle body may have cracks - would account for drop in MPG but I don't think smell.

More likely the catalytic converter is shot. This is typically what causes rotten egg smell. (sorry to say I think MAF cheaper)

    Good luck

MAF sensor is 199.00 at speedycarparts.com......my car ran horrible when it was failing, but two bolts and a new MAF and car ran great again. I never had gas smell or bad mileage though. Car idled poor though.
