Powertrain fault code 850 1996

Driving car and the orange arrow on dash started flashing along with orange and green light on sport/economy mode switch. Manual says go to dealer. Alex Peper Code reader said "PO734 - Gear 4 incorrect ratio, received from transmission controller address $1F". We were able to reset but now check engine light came on and will not reset off. Car and transmission seem to work fine. Any ideas on what this means and what should be done? Just put in suspension with IPD sways and don't want to hurt car (but also not spend a ton of money). Thank you.

It should be just a simple read off the code and reset it deal. That year model of 850 is probably late enough that it has the "check the trans" code that is logged into the fuel injection side when something logs into the trans side so that it will turn on the check engine light as well as flashing the upshift arrow.

      Mark,

Thank you for the response. The car is running perfectly and I am having none of the problems from the later posting with the guy who is having trouble with his girlfriends 850 sportwagon. Another sight recommended the PNP problem and rowing the shifter. I am trying a different computer to try to reset the check engine light as the laptop I used originally is ancient and the program might not be working properly. Hope this works!

Was able to reset code so will drive it a few days and see what happens.

As is usually the case, as I was looking for the PNP, I started seeing a puff of smoke every so often from the back passenger side of the engine. Looks like an oil leak...

        Thank you again

Yep, most likely a turbo oil return line...common leak. It hits the hot exhaust and gives off smoke. Get it checked, but not likely related to the problems you've been having.
