Used turbo unit, good or not? 850

I'm looking at buying a used turbo. The seller says it was pulled from a salvage yard, and that the unit was tested and found to be good, but he no longer needs it. It looks clean in the photos, but there is no way for me to examine it up close before buying it. If I go ahead and get it, is there a way visualy for me to see if it's in good working order before installation, or is there a convieniant way to test the units without them being installed?
One more question, should the seals need to be replaced in it, is it something a mechanic of competant skill can tackle successfully, or would it have to be sent to a specialty shop?
All my experiance is with older normally asperated Volvos. So if my questions seem odd, thats why. :)

Tough call, but I have purchased used turbo's with good luck. It is a bit of a chance, but they can be rebuilt generally for $300 or so. Put one in an 855 quite a few miles ago and it is still doing very well. I deal only with a bone yard I trust though.

Good luck,

dick
