Climate a/c recirculation 850

Hi all...

I have a 1994 850 wagon with manual climate control. When I got the car the recirc button would do nothing. Light was always on and it would only dim slightly when I toggled it to off. Damper wouldn't move at all (visually watched it).

Unplugged the recirculation damper motor and the switch indicator light turned on and off as it should have.

Acquired another damper motor at the junkyard, put it in the car without hooking it up to the actual damper arm assembly and the switch light went off and on as normal. The trouble is, it only made the motor turn once, I think to open and has never worked since. I've left it at off in an effort to not burn the little motor again.

My question is what else should I have to change on this thing? The switch itself? Is there a fuse anywhere I should look at? Glove compartment is still out of the car and has been for about 6 months so I've been "manually" managing my recirc.

Anything would be absolutely appreciated.

My dealer mechanics told me to NEVER run the motors when they are unhooked to the damper. Internally, they have a position switch, and this could break and ruin the motor.
You could open up the motor box and match the vent to where the motor is. Then reattach the box and try again.

Is it possible you merely hooked up the damper motor out of synch (closed when the switch said open or vice versa)? I had this issue after replacing evaporator. If memory serves I just disconnected the motor, changed the switch position, reconnected motor and after that the motor went either direction as it should. The motor seems to work pretty hard for a moment at either end of its travel. I'm not surprised these dampers or the control rods occasionally break.

I'm going to try a voltmeter on the switch to see if that's the issue. If it isn't I guess it's yet another motor.
It's hard to believe that the damper motor could break if I run it without the damper connected. That's telling me that these things break all the time when the damper arm falls off of the motors assembly.
I would like to think that Volvo would be smarter than that but it's absolutely possible that the motor needs that resistance to know when to stop to form a good seal.
It's probably similar to power windows I suppose (assuming they also work with resistance)

Thanks for the help, I'll keep everyone up to date.

I used the voltmeter and here are my findings

3 wires, 1 ground totaling to four wires total.

        Switch off (light off)
        1 wire gives 12v
        2 wires give nothing
        1 ground

        Switch on (light on)
        2 wires gives 12v
        1 wire give nothing
        1 ground

I assume it's operating correctly. Sorry, I don't quite remember colors but if it's pertinent I'll retry. Motors still don't work, I'm thinking the motors are indeed dead.

They are harder to open than I thought so I haven't gotten a chance to try and reset their position.

My indy said that they've found these motors functioning with the little damper arm off or completely stripped so I don't think they do have a position switch as they operate without the arm on them offering resistance or anything.

        Cheers
