1996 850 Turbo:

Because I've become somewhat addicted to the power and accelaration of my turbo brick, I began looking for ways to get more juice from her. In doing so I came across a thing on ebay that could increase the bhp of my brick by as much as 20 hp. So I went ahead and bought it and what i got was essentially a resistor and a sheet of paper with installation instructions.

Basically it instructs you to disconnect the intake air temp (IAT) sensor and plug the resistor into it - in essence fooling the ECU into thinking it's cold out. But since my turbo doesn't have the IAT sensor, the secondary option is to plug it into the coolant temp sensor. Well, if you disconnect the coolant temp sensor the check engine light goes on and the fan sounds like it's going into overtime. So my question is: will this really increase bhp? How will fooling the computer into thinking it's cold out (or in the engine) result in more power?

Yup, looks like I just flushed $16 down the drain. I've looked on IPD but am not quite ready to drop $1K on the exhaust and computer upgrades (yet).

In any case, since the turbo models don't have IAT (intake air temp) sensors, does anyone want the resistor? I'll send it to you, a gift from one brickhead to another.......

Are you familiar with IPD ?.... 850 1996

Yes, I'm afraid you lost $20, but I hope it at least enhanced your eBay feedback score.

But are you familiar with IPD?

I don't know how addicted you've become -- all addictions cost something -- but if it's a serious addiction, IPD offers some options that can actually increase your engine's output.
I'm not a specialist in your 850 model, but among various models they offer such things as:
    - reprogrammed ECUs and turbo waste-gate controls. For some cars, they have a new kit with which you can download a new software package right into your engine at home, without having to send the chip out for an exchange.
    - increased size or less restrictive exhaust systems.
    - etc.
And they also offer upgrades to your suspension, brakes, etc., as well in order to make better use of your increased horsepower/torque.

Of course, this will cost you more than $20, I'm afraid. But aside from their prices, at least you'll be able to trust that they'll deliver as promised.

You got HOSED. I hope you didn't pay too much.
The chip in the ECU must be reprogrammed to get more HP. Also the exhaust must be replaced with a larger CAT back pipe. IPD sells everything you need. You send them your ECU and they reprogram it.
