boosting horsepower 850 1996

1996 850 Turbo:

Because I've become somewhat addicted to the power and accelaration of my turbo brick, I began looking for ways to get more juice from her. In doing so I came across a thing on ebay that could increase the bhp of my brick by as much as 20 hp. So I went ahead and bought it and what i got was essentially a resistor and a sheet of paper with installation instructions.

Basically it instructs you to disconnect the intake air temp (IAT) sensor and plug the resistor into it - in essence fooling the ECU into thinking it's cold out. But since my turbo doesn't have the IAT sensor, the secondary option is to plug it into the coolant temp sensor. Well, if you disconnect the coolant temp sensor the check engine light goes on and the fan sounds like it's going into overtime. So my question is: will this really increase bhp? How will fooling the computer into thinking it's cold out (or in the engine) result in more power?
