If you were closer to me, I would lash you with wet noodles :) 40K miles on the same plugs? You need a tune up every 25K! Just make sure you get OEM parts, and a new seal for the cap.
As for the one way valve on the vacuum line, you should be able to see it. It is in the thin vacuum line that goes from the driver's side of the radiator to the manifold. Or is that on my V70? Anyway, in that area. Check the other vacuum lines that to to the relay and the air pump, which is below the battery tray. If the splash guard is off, you will be able to see the air pump in front of the left front wheel.
