I am getting lazy and senile. Can a 1997 850 remote be programmed like the 1995 or is it just dealer only?????
Thanks,
Klaus

Anybody want to swap a 97 remote for a 95, had 97 that totaled, so I have the spare remote, replaced the 97 with a 95, and would like to have a spare remote

Don't mean to nit pick, but my experience has been that the car gets programed, not the remote. Case in point:
My wifes remote would not work any more, so I gave her mine. Programmed it the obvious way. Guess what. Now if both cars are in the garage, and she uses the remote, both cars respond. If mine was unlocked and hers was locked, she hits the button, now mine is locked and hers is unlocked.
Hope this isn't an anomaly.

Very true, MG. It is the car that gets the information from the remote. But I do not understand why one of your cars unlocks while the other locks? Shouldn't the cars respond the same way, both unlock/lock at the same time?

I'm not so sure. www.vlvworld.com lists three different PN's for 850 remotes. One for '93-94.5, one for '95, and another for '96-97.
That doesn't mean they definitely won't work, but I haven't had any luck getting the two remotes from a '94 to work my '95...
Let us know if you find anything. The information I have found through searching the archives has been inconclusive.

Worked like a charm :) !! The 1997 now has two(2) remotes that work!
If I could only find a transceiver for my 1995... sigh.

Hmmm. Just when I had given up, you give me hope. Now I have to wait for dark to go try it again.
Out of curiosity, is the part number on the back of your '95 remote P/N 9148646 (if you have it handy)? That's what mine is. I can't get either of the P/N 3545653 remotes from the '94 car to work.

The remote I got with my 1995 has P/N 3545653. Does that mean the PO gave me a bogus remote? My problem is that when I turn the key on 5 times, the red light does not blink, so I just assumed that my transceiver died.
When I first bought the car, I stopped by the dealer and asked if he could make it work. He came back in a few minutes and said it would cost too much money!
I am waiting for a 1995 to show up at the local pick&pull so I can get another one to try it. Transceivers do cost a lot of money, and they are a pain to get to, having to remove the knee bolster.

I'll let this thread die. I can't get any reaction out of the red light when tryingg to program the fobs/transceiver.
I've made it the last 3+ years with only one fob. I think I'll manage.

Very interesting, your remote works but the car will not get into programming mode. I have read just about everything there is to read to get my 1995 to work, but the lack of a blinking light has me stumped.
Of course, the key works great. So for the last 3 years, we haven't needed to carry one of those remotes in our pocket.
One of the mysteries of life!!!

I'll try mine again tonight. I couldn't get the red light to blink either. I do know that my transceiver is good as I have one P/N 9148646 fob that does work.
I'll try the other ones tonight. If I can't get them to work, then I'll try re-programming the one that works just to see if I can get the light to blink.
Maybe what you need is a transceiver from a 1994...

Yes, 97 is same as 93-96. 98 requires volvo scan tool and PIN# from volvo database. 99 and newer require vida software download.
NOTE- 98-2000 S/V/C 70 CAN have used remotes programmed.
01-05 C-70 CAN have used remotes programed.
99 and up S-80 CANNOT have used remotes programmed UNLESS you have the remote specific code #s that came with the remote packaging.
01 and up V70/S60 same as S80.
00-04 S?V 40 can have used remotes programmed, software download required.
04.5 and up S40/V50 same as S80

Thanks Bob,
The 1997 in my possession has one good rmt and one not working. The batteries were dead :) but even with new batteries, no go. So, as soon as it gets dark enough to see the little red light turn on, I will try programming it.
My 1995 has a dead transceiver, and I am well versed on the 1998 :(

I have one good and one bad on my 94 850. Is there any particular part that usually goes bad on the 850 remote? I could try to repair it if I knew what part failed.

Do some searching of the achives here and maybe on volvospeed.com In my recent searches on the topic I came across some info about a resistor or some such thing coming loose inside the key fob. Fix was to open it up and re-solder.
Good luck,

If it's not the battery, I can't help :)
