odometer roll back ? S70

Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing a 1998 s70 glt turbo. Odometer reading 93,000 miles. Current owner asking 6400.00. I offered 5500.00 which we agreed upon. Problem. I used car fax to check vehicle records and it appears that this car has roughly 190,000 miles on it according to car fax records. Of course car fax says it could have been input as a clerical error. What are some other methods you would look for to make a final determination if this information is truly correct.
Thank you.

Do you have the service records and the logbook?

As Klaus pointed out the ECU stores the mileage, but the ECU may have been swapped,

If I were buying this, I would pay someone to read the ECU, and compare the result to the odometer and the carfax. Then I would hope to use common sense to figure what seems to be most likely.

This is a tough one. If there are any service records going back a few years or a friendly dealer where the car was serviced, you could check the milage. If the ECU has been swapped out from another vehicle, you are out of luck with the scanner.
190K miles is a lot, and timing belt would have been changed (check for sticker with date).

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

Hello, I believe the info for the mileage is stored in the vehichles ecu. It has a digital odometer, so even if it was changed with a lower mileage one it would change to the number stored in the ecu. You could take it to a volvo dealer or an independent with Vadis software and they shouldbe able verify the correct mileage.
    Thanks
    Dennis

Yes, the milage of the vehicle is stored in the ecu. I recently have my odometer replaced. And the ecu automatically set the new odometer to the correct milage right after the car was started. It's almost impossible to tinker with the milages of these cars.

The ECU resets the odometer? That must be something it is commanded to do, because if your odometer fails due to gear breakage, those miles are just lost. In other words the ECU can't read the odometer, and adjust it accordingly. The function you mention must assume an odometer set at 0 initially?

I know the odometer is incremented by pulses from the ECU - it would neat to sit and watch it ratchet the new odometer up to the stored mileage from 0, if that is how it works.
