Stubborn Automatic Transmission Issue 850 1996

Some weeks ago, I posted about some idling and electical problems with my 854. Because of your suggestions, most of those have been resolved, so I am greatly in your debt. I cleaned the throttle body, the battery contacts and spent some hours with the vacuum lines and some electical tape. Since then, the car has been behaving well, except:

It doesn't shift out of first until 4500rpm or so (enabling WINTER mode kicks it back down to 2500, but I've been told this is damaging to the transmission). Switching the gear shift down to 3 or L has no effect whatever (unless, again, in WINTER mode). The transmission doesn't appear to be slipping at all. I read the codes last week and nothing was reported to be wrong with the transmission. Yesterday, I had it flushed.

The mechanics I've spoken with are stumped. One tried to sell me a new valve body for $314. I politely declined.

any ideas?

Thanks,

Sebastian

P.S. I've been reading a bit about a PNP switch, which is associated with these types of problems. Is there any way to check this without replacing it?

Is it possible you disturbed a wiring harness or connector while doing the other work? 3 experiences I've had might be informative:

on one car the dealer had replaced the trans before I bought the car used. They nicked a wiring harness under the hood and damaged the engine temp sensor with the result that the dashboard temp gauge worked erratically. Easy to fix once I found it (not a Volvo).

poorly seated large under-dash red connector after replacing evaporator. The trans sometimes did what yours does (this is my 850).

stuff spilled in center console on a 240. The auto trans gear position sensor is there on that car and the starter sometimes wouldn't engage (as if not in park or neutral). On the 850 does your mode switch and all window and mirror switches work? Also possibly a bad ground to the console especially if any work was done there in the past.

    Stumper!!

When the PNP fails, you usually get a flashing arrow and the reverse lights no longer work.

It might be worth dropping $100 at your local friendly dealer and have them look for any codes. At least they can point you in the right direction. Their diagnostic code reader is much better than the generic.

BTW, the W switch will put your car in 3rd gear which is OK when you are already rolling.

Is it only 1st gear that acts this way?

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

I have a '95 850, and it had erratic shifting problems. Primarily dropping in and out of overdrive, but it did get progressively worse. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor and it fixed the problem. The tranny just did not know what speed the car was traveling at, so it just kept hunting around for a gear.

Stumper indeed. I should have mentioned that I did, in fact, get the codes read by a dealer.

The transmission seems to get into the 4-5000 rpm range every time it shifts up, and it kicks down far too late.

I was a bit confused by the previous poster's mention of a speed sensor. Is this the same as a gear position sensor, or does it have something to do with the ABS system? Excuse my ignorance.

      Thanks,

      Sebastian

I am not sure if the speed sensor is the same as the gear position sensor. But I would have someone take a look at it. I recently had problems with transmission shifting/not shifting at strange times. I took it to Volvo dealerships in two different cities and they could not figure it out (I mentioned the speed sensor after posting my problem here, but the dealerships didnt want my opinion since there were no error codes). I finally took it to an indy shop and they took a multimeter to the speed sensor and saw that it was not running with in spec(just about 20 ohms out of its tolerance). They replaced the sensor and I have had no problems since. Moral of the story; even if its not throwing any codes the sensor could still be bad. (something the dealerships should have been able to realize)

Seems like your situation was very similar to mine, Jon. You didn't happen, over the course of your ordeal, to find out the specs for the speed sensor, did you? It just so happens that I have a multi-meter around and would very much like to check the sensor before I go and get a new one.

          Thanks,

          Sebastian

I wish I could remember what the spec was but I can't seem to recall it. I did briefly try to search the Internet but came up with nothing. Maybe you could call a shop and see if they have any idea. It would be nice to check it yourself before spending the money. I think the sensor itself is some where around $70 but with labor I think I spent around $200...more than I would have liked. Good luck! I wish I could be of more help.
