Transmission slow to shift from second 850 1994

205K miles and sometimes after running and hot it will have problems shifting from second and upward. This is after stopping and then starting again such as fueling. Is this an adjustment problem or transmission going out? It has Mobil 1 trans fluid which is not that old, perhaps 10 k miles.

Appreciate the input,

dick

    Dick:

Just wanted to say that I bought a complete set of relays on ebay last year from a crashed 850 with very few miles and plugged them all in. There are three relays with "J" marked on them and I don't know what they do, but I can tell you for sure my car shifted really smooth with all the new relays. Probably just my imagination, but might be worth a try.

Thanks for the info. Hot relays do strange things. We just installed the trans. cooler this morning and will see what happens now. Still hot here in TX so test will be soon.

Look for any A-1 DTCs. Your fluid may be too hot. The TCU somehow checks the temp and tries to keep the tranny from upshifting if the fluid is hot. I know it will cause a down shift from 4 to 3, if that is the case.
Perhaps an external cooler? I know you have the correct amount of fluid on board :)

Thanks Klaus. Fluid is correct to possibly a little high. Just changed out the radiator on this car past weekend. Wonder if the temp sensor could be bad. This has only happened when the car has been driven, shut down for fuel and then started again. Son took it this morning and so far so good. He does home health in the boondocks so the car gets a punishing, but to put a new car on these roads would be foolish. No dash lights so will check for codes in the manual way.

This is the car with the oil pan skid plate and the larger diameter tires? Tell your son to drive it in 3rd on those dirt roads until you install a 1997 tranny. The 1997 allows you to down shift to second and it stays there until you come to a full stop, then shifts to 1st. Very nice for hilly and slow driving.
The engine rpms determine the tranny fluid pump speed, so slow rpm will not cool the fluid enough. Besides, in Texas, all cars should have an aux tranny cooler.

The transmission cooler has now been in 2 weeks and no more problem with shifting. Believe the new radiator has a smaller cooler for transmission and consequently it may be less effective. Anyway, things are better and will be installing one in my 98 S-70. It is easy and inexpensive--$35 - 40 and an hour or two on the first one.

            Dick,
When you install a tranny cooler on your S70, supply pictures. It will be good for those in high temperature climates or those who pull trailers. You are right about the size of the tranny cooler in the radiator, plus the fact that it sits behind the condenser.
The gents on Volvospeed.com would also like pics :)

Again, thanks. I have put an aux cooler on my 940 T, but room there is no problem. Yes, the car has the IPD skid plate and tires slightly over. This also is the car I had special front springs made to give an extra inch of clearance.

Any recommendations on oil coolers? May have to put one in my 98 T5
