coolant ran low--advice: did i likely overheat? 850 1996

The hose under the expansion tank (probably a loose clamp) leaked most of the fluid out of the expansion tank; I had to put in between a third and a half a gallon of water when I noticed the issue. The warning light flashed on my dash for a minute or two before I noticed it and safely pulled over and added enough fluid to get home. The temp stayed right at 3 o'clock, no higher. I should be in the clear, right? The 850 temp gauge isn't like the late 80s 240 gauges that electronically keep the needle in the middle, which can be a bit misleading? Thanks for your feedback--I'd hate to think I overheated this baby...

    coolant ran low--advice: did i likely overheat? 850 1996

About 4 years ago, my thermostat failed and the temp guage went to max plus the coolant was boiling out of the expansion tank before I could get pulled over. I ended up replacing the thermostat where I stopped the car and it has run fine for about 60K miles since then. So if the engine can take that much stress, you should have no problem...

I thought I saw where the gauge isn't updated constantly, and may not respond immediately to an actual change.

That being said, I don't see any way that your problem caused any damage to your engine. I remember when my resevoir tank cap was bad, it leaked very slowly until the light would come on. I'd top things off, and over months the same thing would happen again. A half gallon isn't enough to stop circulation, that is for sure. That particular idiot light gives you fair warning.

The low level light will come on way before it overheats, so it sounds ok.

If the temp didn't go above 1/2 way mark, your good.

Way to be alert! Overheating the 850 can be very costly!
