Master or slave clutch cylinder most likely to fail? 850 1996

Hi,

Yesterday the clutch (original) on my 1996 855 wagon with 162 k miles died without much warning. Couldn't get it into reverse and ten minutes later it was impossible to get into any gear at all.

Now the pedal is completely without resistance and sticks to the floor if pressed. I am pretty sure it's a hydraulic failure but I can't see any sign of leakage at either master or slave cylinder.

Any tips for troubleshooting to pin point the failure?

I rebuilt the master cylinder on my mother in law's SAAB 9000 with a new gasket some time ago but then the leak was pretty evident with fluid on the floor nest to the pedal.

TIA
/Johan

    Update:

I took a closer look today but still nothin obvious. So I went ahead and bled the system and lo and behold, clutch works like a charm again. It will probably die again at some point sooner or (preferably) later but I'm happy to get the car rolling.

Cheers and thanks for the input
    /Johan

When (not if) it fails again, then replace both master and slave. In my experience, when one goes, the other is not far behind.

Thanks for the input. You are probably right that another failure is imminent. Obviously there is a leak somewhere.

At least your car is still driveable. My old VW bug lost the cable and I would put it into 1st, crank the starter to get the car moving, then shift gears without a clutch. The only problem was traffic lights, where I had to turn the engine off to get it into 1st.
If there is no hydraulic leak, then the linkage fell apart.

So the fluid level in the MC hasn't dropped? Hmm, with the absence of fluid leakage in the engine compartment I'd suspect some part of the mechanical linkage either at the pedal or between the slave cylinder and the clutch itself... I hope it's something simple.

I can't swear the level hadn't dropped but there was plenty of fluid left. Or is the outlet for the clutch feeder hose above MIN level of the reservoir? I didn't check very closely but topped of the level.

I will inspect the system more closely over the weekend (remove air filter canister).

Changing either master or slave cylinder doesn't look too bad in the Haynes manual if I can confirm that any of those have failed. Otherwise I'll tow it to a shop next week. (I don't have the guts to go driving without the clutch :-))

      cheers
      /Johan
