following ignition turned off, a motor keeps running 850 1994

After turning of the ignition of non turbo a motor of somekind keeps running and drains the battery. It stays running for three minutes and then stops. The motor like noise is in fornt of the battery somewhere, I put my fingers on the radiator fan and its not it. I checked my diagnotics A 1-7 and no trouble reported. This motor noise does not come on immediately but four minutes after you exit the car. Then it lasts about three minute. It wont reapear until I run the engine again. I repaired my last 6 volvoes mostly myself but this problem has got me stumped. This was dicovered when a dead battery was replaced. The noise is definitely under the hood. Hope some one can help me. If you're absolutely sure it's not the cooling fan then it may be the air pump. It's located under the battery and is controlled by a thermostatic switch in the coolant system. It's supposed to pump air into the exhaust system when the engine is cold to get the catalytic converter up to temp quickly. But it's also supposed to shut off after the engine warms up. Maybe the thermostatic switch is bad?

I think what you are describing are the radiator cooling fan. There are a couple of problems that will have them run well beyond when they should.

The most likely problem is a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor but in your case you have no other codes and it will set many.

The lack of other codes makes me think the cooling fan relay is at fault. It is located on the top of the fan shroud. Trace the wiring back from the blower fan and you will first encounter that relay near the top of the shroud.

I would try to give it a good smack and see if the fan turns off. If it does, get a new relay.

Thanks guys for your input. I poked around on wires and relays above the radiator. and the problem quit. Car runs like a top now. We are deep in snow here in Michigan so Ill waite till spring and explore the air pump. Thanks
