My V70R had some issues coming home today. While on the highway, it stumbled, missed and died. I pulled over, and started it back up. I was able to drive it home, but it continued to stumble and miss.

Got home and pulled codes P2404 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Sense Circuit Range/Performance, and three codes indicating missing on various cylinders. The check engine light did come on.

I previously(couple months ago) pulled an evaporative system code/CEL that was corrected by tightening down the gas cap. The gasket has some small radial cracks in it, and I intend on replacing it.

I want to rule out the simple at this point, so...

My questions:

Will a gas cap/filler leak cause a full stall like this?
Will bad gas cause a full stall?

This sounds like an Electronic Throttle Module failure. Just happened with my 04v70 2.5T. I had the same prob with my 2001 V70 and the eventually issued a recall. It is supposed to affect only 1999-2002 years, but I'm thinking the 2004 may have been built in 2002. I'm exploring it with my dealer now. You may want to do the same.

Have you pulled any OBD codes for your T5? I will be curious to hear what your dealer says . Would this be considered a drive-train issue as far as a warranty is considered....I'm guessing not. I only have a drive-train warranty.

A bad gas cap seal will NOT cause the engine to stall, but it will turn on your CEL. Replace it.
Bad gas may have enough water/dirt to cause your engine to stall but seldom while driving on the highway. Mine died last week while running out of gas when the computer said that I still had 15 miles to go. I assumed that there was ice in the bottom of the tank which caused the float to misread the level of gasoline. I got a few miss fires, LOL. Good thing there was a pump I could coast into at the corner :)

You misfires could be caused by a number of reasons. Check the oneway valve for the charcoal cannister vacuum line to the intake manifold. Check or replace the fuel filter, cheap fix. Pull the plugs and check the electrodes for wear (rounding).

Thanks for your post, Klaus. I have been driving the car to work this week(4 miles each way, so not so far I couldn't walk if I needed to). The car has behaved.....but I can get it to sputter if I take a hard right(not left)...HMMM. I have well over a half tank of gas in the car, but I filled up at a local station in Canton, NC where I am sure not many people fill with premium.....very well could be old gas.

The car is a 2004 V70R with 75000 miles. I am happily surprized at how similar the engine and components are to my 95 850 Turbo. I did alot of work on that car, and I plan on keeping this car away from the dealer if I can.

These cars have a recall on the Fuel Pressure sensor, which was done on the car.....At this point I am going to run some heet and lucas fuel injector stuff, and check connections on the fuel pump. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

A bottle of Stabil gas treatment would do wonders if it is indeed water in the tank! A hard right turn will slosh everything over to the left side where the pickup is in the tank.
When I ran out of gas last week, same thing happened. The computer said I had 15 miles to go before empty, but a hard turn caused a misfire or 3. I ran out of gas as I coasted to the pump. I attributed it to ice in the bottom of the tank displacing gasoline. It would be nice to be above freezing :) At the present time (11:45am) it is still -11F but with blue skies.

Replace your gas filter, the one under the car, just for piece of mind. It should be replaced about now anyway.

Get those codes cleared,
