ScanTech timing belt 850

in a previous posting about which brand of control arms to choose,
Ozark Lee suggested me to avoid ScanTech ones like the plague !

I've just installed 2 weeks ago a new ScanTech timing belt made in Germany,
Should I replace it by a genuine Volvo one ? because the one replaced was a genuine Volvo made in UK.

Thanks guys for the info

I have never even seen a ScanTech timing belt so I don't know what to tell you. If it was German it was likely a re-packaged Continental belt and you should be fine.

I run Continental belts on two of the three Volvos and my daughter's Porsche as well. I had to put a Gates belt on the new 850 yesterday as it was all I could find locally and it was way overdue for a change. I plan on changing out the rollers and tensioner in a few months and at that time I will switch it to a Conti belt as well.

My feeling is that the belt is not made by Continental because I've installed a Continental one into my other 850 last winter and I've noticed that the branding logo was different on the Scantech belt and the rubber was more glossy...

The question is: should I keep it or replace it with a Continental one? hummm....

Thanks

I think "Hmmm" is right. That is such a mission critical part and the consequences of a failure are so dire I would be inclined to change it. I'm nervous about the brand new Gates that I put in the Platinum Turbo but I don't intend to run it more than a few thousand miles before I change both of the rollers and the tensioner. When I found out that my old belt was installed an unknown number of miles ago - I just fixed the odometer at 132 k and the last belt was at 64k - and in December of 1999. I figured even a possibly substandard belt is better than what I was running then.

Most of the "fleet repair" budget for this month goes to replacing the evap and the accumulator in my son's 850 to keep him cool.

What a PITA for a $30.00 part.

My 2ยข.
