instrument panel lights V70-XC70 2001

My wife drives a '01 Volvo V70 T5. Recently a couple of the lights that illuminate the instrument panel have burned out. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to remove the front panel(s) to access the bulbs for replacement.
The bulbs that have burned out are around the dial for the temperature control.

If anyone has a website with detailed info that would be great

Check the back of the owner's manual for bulb type. I heard that Honda has the same bulbs for much cheaper than Volvo dealer. It's worth a call to the Honda store.

I recently replaced these bulbs on my '01 V70 and it was easy task. First, remove the pin holder located below the environmental module by prying on both sides. Once pin holder is removed, you will have to remove the 2 bolts at the bottom of the environmental module. The module snaps in and out so pull straight out while prying on both sides. (take care not to damage adjoining surfaces) Once it comes out, you will need to temporarily disconnect the wires to the cigarette lighter so you can have more room to access the back side of module. The bulb holders are either white or grey and recessed directly behind the temperature controls. Use a small flat screwdiver to turn the defective bulb about 1/4 turn CCW. You may need to use your wife's tweezers to pull the bulb out and to guide the replacement back in. My bulb's Volvo part number was 30739356 @ $10.48 each. I believe the white and grey base bulb holders may be slightly different in light color, so you may want to remove yours and take to the dealer for correctness sake. While I was in there, I found the temperature sensor vent and motor was filled with lots of dust/dirt, so I vacuumed these out. Take care and don't damage the sensor (looks like a horizontal wire behond the vent) I'm sure it is quite fragile. Hey, you're finished already. Don't forget to reconnect the cigarette lighter wires. Just reverse all steps to put all back in the dash.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Wayne

I will bet these assembles use the Radio Shack 12 volt microlamp bulb, just like the Volvo radio and the switch lamps. If it does, you cost drops from $10 + to about 75 cents each.

Dear Wayne, thanks very much for your reply. I believe that I follow all the steps except I am not sure where the environmental module is located. Can you provide me with a description of what is looks like or how I may locate it.
Thanks, Fred.

Fred, I'm sorry for my terminolgy. I called it an environmental module for lack of a better word. I was referring to the enire section that's located below the radio and above the pin holder. That whole section can be pulled out once the 2 screws at the bottom are removed. One more word of caution, the fan speed and temperature knobs are easily scratched, so use a towel to place it on when you turn it over for accessing the bulbs. I've found that patience is important to prevent damage when working around these things, so don't get frustrated when they don't snap in and out easily. It will go back in easier than the removal process. Trust me, your efforts will be appreciated when you can see the temperature settings at night once again.

Take care,
Wayne

Here is a bunch of links to diagrams + instructions. A couple of notes

http://www.freewebs.com/howardsvolvos/cabinelectronics.htm

1. Read carefully how to dis/reconnect the battery if you intend to do so. It is unnecessarily to do so BTW. There is a link in my notes that shows how to do it.

2. Ditto to the pricy bulbs. If a RadioShack replacment is for $.75, def do that!
