strut mount issue--have heard there are shims to reduce noise? 850 1996

Volvo 850 1996 GLT

I had some bilstein touring struts put on the front end. I Used new mounts and spring seats from FCP. Turning at slow speeds make a lot of noise from the right side that sounds like rubber slippage/creaking. CV boots look in tact. I think I read somewhere on this board about factory shims or some such thing to reduce front end noise from strut mounts? Anyway I don't have a good Volvo indy in town or my own setup to work on struts. Anyone had similar rubbery/creaking w/ newly mounted struts? Thanks. Paul

What kind? If they were the aftermarkets you are pretty much screwed from the get go. OEM only on those parts and the real trick is to buy XC90 spring seats.

The only "shims" I have heard of was one guy that chopped up an old innertube and shoved it under castellated part of the upper mount to shut up his broken spring seats. He has actually been quite happy with the results but I bet he fixes it for real before winter sets in.

I may try the same thing on my '96s. The only thing more annoying that the clank from the broken spring seats is the griping about it by the two drivers.

Check the three top bolts on the shock mount, inside the engine compartment. They need to be nice and snug.
If you didn't change the end links when you swapped the struts, check them. Just reach behind the wheel and grab the narrow metal rod that goes up/down and give it a good shake. If it moves, replace it with and IPD version. This is easily done at home.
