O.K., folks just headed home from work and for whatever reason the orange colored ABS idiot light came on. Checked the manual when I got home and it states, "IF THE WARNING LAMP LIGHTS UP THERE IS A MALFUNCTION OF THE ABS SYSTEM AND THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE DRIVEN TO A VOLVO DEALER FOR INSPECTION."

I guess my first question is can I still drive the car indefinitely with the standard braking system? I have vacation coming up next week.
Second question would be can I diagnose this problem myself?

I have had the car since 2001 and it now has 171,000 miles on it. This is the first time this light has come on.

    Try wiggling the ignition key around a bit. When my ignition switch started going bad it would cause the ABS light to flash on and off. If you have a bunch of stuff hanging on your keychain try just using ignition key al by itself.

    Yes, and yes. ABS is intended to keep the wheels from locking when in a panic situation. It has little effect on normal driving, just that the rear brakes do more braking than they should, which is not a short term problem.

    Check the codes in A-3. Try clearing them first and the ones that don't go away are the real ones.
    Most have started having problems with the axle getting rusted/crudded up to such a point that the sensors can no longer look at the splines and see the wheel rotate. This means pulling off a wheel and looking at the backide of the rotor - at the axle. Usually, a wire brush solves that minor headache.

      Klaus,
      When I check any codes using the A-3 socket combo, can you please refesh my memory as to how many times to push the button again and the wait and push again? What you say may be true about the axle problem and rust as this morning the ABS light never came on the whole commute to work. Weird!
