This is becoming a constant problem now.. and a bit annoying... When I start Bjorn the shiftlock goes on.. I know how to override to take it out of park.. but the problem is the turn signals dont work.. so I have to shut the car off and try again....sometimes a few times.. what I have been doing that helps sometimes is the turn the key to the first position, press the shiftlock and then release and start engine...
Why is this happening? I am taking him to the mechanic next week.. but curious on what is causing this... it is getting me upset..

I have a 96 850 and have been experiencing the same issue.

When it occurs turn the key back slightly when the car is running but not enough to shut it off. You'll find that everything works normally. It seems to be an ignition switch problem as stated previously, but to me it's not enough of an annoyance to change anything at this point.

I leave my lights on all the time and only found this "cure" when it occurred at night for the first time.

I have also started to have this problem as well. I would also add that the day time running light are out. So far for me it is just a matter of restarting and all is normal. I agree that the ignition is the place to start looking. Has anyone had this problem diagnosed. My car is an early model S70 1998 with 220,000 km.

The best way to find out is to just move the key slightly, forward or back, when you have a problem. Keep the engine running and see if the running lights come on.

I suggest you or your mechanic take a hard look at the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

The electrical portion of the ignition switch on these cars are notorious for intermiittent contact problems, causing problems with the shift lock, turn signals, lights/radio/wipers/ABS warning light, etc. Any or all systems can be affected. The problem switches date back to 75 and continue to 2000 model years. Same basic design. A new batch of switches starting in 04 has an even worse record of failure, on the S40/V50 models
