Engine hesitation under power 850 1995

Hi All,

My first time posting. Just bought a '95 850 GLT, with 115,000KM on it, it's in great condition and I love it. Had it about a month and already put 5000KM+ on. However, have noticed that there is a constant and regular, (about every 5 seconds), hesitation in the engine when cruising under power. There is also an audible click, (like the A/C engaging/disengaging but happens even when A/C off), which precedes the hesitation and seems to come from just in front of the centre dashboard, followed by a very soft noise which reminds me of a breathing respirator you see in hospital shows. The noise, (click and gasp) is there during deceleration, not noticeable during acceleration, does not happen at idle or when car is out of gear. Mileage is unaffected, (33mpg/highway), and handling is fine, just annoying like hearing a sink drip at night, and I'm worried it might be foreshadowing something serious. Any suggestions?

Thanks

John

To disable the AC compressor, unplug the pressostat switch, directly in front of the firewall on the passenger side, connected to the black AC line.
Run through all of the codes in B-1 and try to clear as many as you can. those left over will be ones that you can tackle and fix yourself. Find a Haynes manual for the 850 and fix it.

If the surging still happens with the pressostat unplugged, it might be the idle control valve or the throttle body needing cleaning. It could also be the MAF connection at the air filter being all dirty - that plug tends to get worn for some strange reason.

have you ever replaced the fuel filter? i have heard some cases where a partially clogged/full fuel filter has aggravated a situation like the one you have and creates a situation where the engine seems to be struggling along. plus, its not a hard replacement.

good luck!

May be some problem w/ the climate control unit? It's a little bit difficult due to the design of the connector but try unplugging the ac compressor clutch wire to see if the hesitation goes away. The climate units are sort of expensive but they are on e-bay every now and then. Have you used the onboard diagnostics unit to check for any problem codes? The climate control temp sensors tend to get plugged up with dust and you can CAREFULLY clean them out with some canned air. They're located up behind the grab handles above each of the front doors.
