Buy an 850 or a S70? S70

I'm in the market for another Volvo. I currently have a 740T that just turned 200K, uses oil and has some piston slap when cold. In addition the paint on the roof and hood and trunk has started to crack.

I want to stay with a turbo engine!

Not having to been able to find a 940T within 500 miles I'm considering an 850 or a S70 with the turbo. not necessarily the T5 or R versions!

So here is the question which would be the better way to go? Later 850 or V70 if I decide to move up?

What kinds of problems do I look for. I know about the computer controlled Idle controls on the 99+ S 70s a look at the 850 board this AM generated a laundry list of problems that sent me back to looking harder at the S 70.

Regards

Woody

As another poster pointed out, you are looking at mature cars in either one. I loved my '95 850 Turbo (I would go high pressure turbo=T5, for my money) - the seats were to die for, and the inside was like new despite 180,000 miles. The seat covers had little wear, which is uncommon in the 850's you will find. Many have cracked seat covers, and the lower left seat back bolster typically gets a lot of wear and wears through.

The '95 was the last year you could read and reset your codes using the under tyhe hood led/switch interface.

The problem with my well maintained '95 850 was that I began to expect it to fail.

'96 850's through S70 had a problem with the ABS computer failing due to some poor solder joints. There is a fellow who does quality repairs for under $200, so this isn't a huge issue.

I just bought a '98 S70 T5 after being disappointed with a '05 V70 Light pressure turbo. I missed the T5 engine, and the seats in the '05 don't compare at all. So I found a '98 with only 55,000 miles on it. Paid a lot of money, but I got what I wanted.

You need to be careful buying one of these. Look for a car with maintenance records (there are numerous things to be done, and knowing and having confidence about what was done when is helpful). The transmissions up till around '98 were a weak link. I always babied mine a bit.

There are common expensive failures. AC components, rear main seal. I think these apply to 850 and S70. Good luck. Don

Both cars you are thinking about are getting into the, ahem, mature category. Therefore, I suggest get the best condition one you can find and afford. Where do you live, is it a Volvo part of the world?

      I live in Coastal NC,

It is a semi Volvo world. We do have a local indi shop who is familiar with Volvos. Also I was a Volvo Marine Mechanic for many years and worked on the 29 valve engines. ( Fixing engines after the owner did not believe us about needing a timing belt, A Shame!)

There is a nice 940 turbo station wagon for sale in central Alabama. It is a long drive from NC but not out of the question, or you can fly to Birmingham. The Toyota dealer wants too much for it now. If you want details, let me know how I can reach you. I checked it last weekend and took it to an independent Volvo specialist.

Well as it turned out I found a nice 98 S70 T5 in the Raleigh NC area, bought it and brought it home.

          Thanks for all the help

As soon as I change the timing belt on my 740T daily driver, it will be up for sale.
