I need the Volvo experts again!! I was driving yesterday and smelled something burning. I then saw white smoke (not steam) coming from under the hood of my car. Pulled over to check and, when I lifted the hood, you would have thought the engine was on fire After about 10 minutes the smoke died down and it looked like it was coming right out of the back of the radiator cooling fan (engine side not grille side). I started the car a few times then shut it off but the fan never engaged at all. Could this be the fan, the motor, the relay? I have no idea!! I've been searching this site but can't seem to find any posts related to my exact problem. If anyone has any idea what the problem is, I'd appreciate your expert opinion and advice!!! Its a so-so difficulty operation to replace the fan and frame unit. Two bolts up high have to come out and at the two lower ones the fan support slips up and out, thank goodness. You just need a replacement unit from a salvage yard. Let me know if you want to try the swap.

It's the fan! First failure I had after buying my '95. Pretty dramatic, uh? Should be OK to drive but you can't use the AC or defrost. You may find one on e-bay.

Hi, watch out not to burn your car! Think there was some recalls related to the cooling fan. check this out with your car details.

well per your description that is only the fan motor.
you can force the fan on by turning your AC on..and then observe with the hood open.
