Cooling Fan Smoking Really Bad!! Would you help me out????? 850 1995

I need the Volvo experts again!! I was driving yesterday and smelled something burning. I then saw white smoke (not steam) coming from under the hood of my car. Pulled over to check and, when I lifted the hood, you would have thought the engine was on fire After about 10 minutes the smoke died down and it looked like it was coming right out of the back of the radiator cooling fan (engine side not grille side). I started the car a few times then shut it off but the fan never engaged at all. Could this be the fan, the motor, the relay? I have no idea!! I've been searching this site but can't seem to find any posts related to my exact problem. If anyone has any idea what the problem is, I'd appreciate your expert opinion and advice!!! Thanks for your time and knowledge!!!
