Tailgate not locking V70-XC70 2003

Hi All,

I recently discovered that my rear tailgate is not locking on my 2003 XC. I pulled off the rear panel and can lock the tailgate manually but I would love to hear any diagnostic ideas.

So far I have checked the following:

--The wires that next to the left side rear tailgate hinge and they appear to be ok as far as I can see.

--The 10amp fuse in the rear fusebox..looks fine and swapped out just to be sure

--I have swapped out some of the relays in the rear fuse box and no changes

Before I either give up and take the car to the dealer or take a guess and buy a new tailgate lock actuator/mechanism I was hoping someone could provide a few more ideas. I am not very good with a voltmeter so I really haven't tested the wires for open circuts.

Thanks in advance!

Angus

    Tailgate not locking V70-XC70 2003

    hello!

You may check wiring harnes inside the hinge. Due to poor design (I had same problem with 2001 XC) over time, especially if the harnes moves slightly, bending action will result in wires in the harnes breaking and resulting in no connection. You can inspect those wires by puling slightly out harnes and removing plastic protective sleeve. If that is the case, you have to option to fix it; first, buy new harnes and install it, second, cut the wires and install connectors on those wires and reconnect them (need to go and get some electrical connecctors). Make sure in either case that you palce and secure well harnes inside the hinge to prevent re-occurence. good luck.

    Tailgate not locking --- FIXED V70-XC70 2003

    Hi All,

I just went back to my car one last time after looking up the correct relay position on the rear panel. Turns out that someone must have moved the relays around in the past and did not put them back in the right places. So the relay spot for the rear lock didn't have a relay!!! Once I popped one in the rear lock worked again!!!

    Angus
