busted antenna S40-V40

Hi there.
I've got a busted antenna on my wife's 2000 S40. I've got the whole assembly out, and the last part of the antenna, i.e. the final metal bit of the antenna proper, and the sleeve bit with the retaining clips, is staying in the metal tube. How do I get the little bugger out? Please save my sanity.

Best,
Gordon

Are you talking power or manual antenna? The manual antenna needs to be completely replaced, the power antenna can have just the insert replaced and does not need to have the motor removed for replacement.

This is a power antenna. The insert has not come all the way out, and thus I cannot replace it. The last section of metal antenna, as well as the sleeve with retaining clips, will not come out. Hence the problem.

Since the entire unit is out of the car, making it harder to work on, place the motor on a workbench with a vise to hold it down. Extend the antenna as far as it will go.
Take a pair of conventional pliers and place it just under the antenna tip. Tap the pliers with a hammer. The sleeve will then slowly come out of the base.

It is usually corrosion around the sleeve that causes the antenna to stop retracting. Take note when you pull the plastic cable out of the motor housing, the grooves must go in on the same side with the new antenna.

BTW, mount the antenna motor back in the car before putting on the new antenna. Have the radio on, so that when you get the white plastic started, all you have to do is turn the radio off to draw it down. A helper is nice to have.

I guess I wasn't clear. The top part of the antenna has broken off. The nylon cord is already out. That part I was able to do without removing the antenna motor assembly. However, the last metal section of the antenna and the sleeve with retaining clips will not come out of their tube.

I will attempt to bash it out from the bottom side, since the antenna tip is already gone.

Bashing is the proper word. Try it with a stick first, you don't want to bend any metal. Ideally, you want a metal pick inserted into the top of the hole to grab the bottom of the sleeve and pull it out.
If there is still 1/4in of antenna sticking out of the tube, try grabbing it with pliers and pulling it out. But that probably fell inside.
