Can't get key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 2002

I've been having a problem for the last few months trying to turn the key from the 1 position back to the 0 position so I could pull the key out of the lock.
Usually I just have had to turn the key to position 2 and them back to 0 and it would come out fine. (didn't have to jiggle the steering wheel or the shifter).
It's not the key, both keys do the same thing.

Yesterday was the coldest it's been (+1°F) and I could not turn the key to 0, which meant the power to the headlights and instrument cluster would stay on and kill the battery in a fairly short time without the engine running.
I decided to let the engine run and turned the heat up to 80F. We were parked on the street, so I had to watch the car from the store for over 30 min. Finally after the interior warmed up the key came out. When I got home I sprayed a grease disolver in the lock cylinder and then some silicon lubricant.
It worked OK for the rest of the day, but this morning (+35°F) I couldn't get the key out again until the car warmed up.
Has anyone had this problem and was there a simple solution to fix it, short of taking it to the dealer?
If I need a new lock cylinder, are special tool required? I have lots of experience working on American and German cars, so the V70 shouldn't be a problem....I hope.
Thanks in advance.

Can't get key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 2002

I just bought a 99 V70 and I was having the same problem.
First check if the shift button isn't stuck. If it is, tap the shifter on the side until it pops out.
I'm not sure if the V70 have shift lock override, but if it does, the button (on the shift) might be stuck in as well.
    Good luck.

Make sure the shifter is all the way into park. Make sure the shift release button on the front face of the shifter has extended to lock the shifter. Play around with the shifter until these things happen and you probably will be able to move the key all the way to off and remove it. If the shifter button is cracked, or the above works, replace the shifter knob. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, but the problem does not appear to be in the shifter.
The shifter locks in park just fine, the button is also fine.
I never have to touch the shifter, just turn the key back and forth for it to come out. I have tried to move the shifter in and out of gear and then into park, but that didin't help.
I feel that it's in the ignition lock assy.
Looks like I'll have to pull it apart and take a look at it now that winter has really set in. I can't be driving the car around and leaving the key in it.

Try this next time: with the gear shift in park, engine running and unable to shut it off and get the key out, try hitting the bottom of your closed fist on top of the shift knob, then see if the key will turn all the way off. Don't hit it too hard though, you might break something in the shifter or your hand!
The dealer's service writer told me about this when it happened to my wife at the local wally world a few months ago. He said there can be a very slight misadjustment with the shifter, shifter button, cable, and ignition switch. I lubed the cable not long ago when I had the console out for gear indicator bulb replacement and the wife reports it's doing much better.

OK, I'll give it a try tomorrow morning and report back.
          Thanks

Can't get key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 2002

I started the car this morning, the key turned to the start position and then back to position 2 like a hot knife going thru warm butter. The same from position 2 back to 1, but it wouldn't go back to 0.
I tried hitting the top of the shifter, as well as turning the wheel back and forth with my knee while jiggling the key. No good.
I let the car warm up for ~20 min and the key turned back to position 0 very easily without touching anything else.
Guess it's time to pull the lock out and look inside.
If I can figure out how to post a few picks, I'll do so.
            Thanks for the help.

There is a cable from under the console to the rear of the lock mechanism for 1998, not sure of your year. That bit of cable tends to get stuck and a drop of OIL will help matters. Once you get the plastic clamshell off the steering column you should be able to see what I am talking about.
You cannot remove the lock, don't even try. The factory uses break-off bolts to secure the lock in place.

Can't get key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 2002

Klaus, Thank You. It appears to be fixed. My 2002 does have a cable attached to the back side of the lock assembly. I was able to remove the lock, two 13mm bolts from the top side. I couldn't release the cable. Pushing on the release tab only enabled me to move it out about 10mm. I didn't want to force anything and break it, my fingers were starting to freeze, so I sprayed a cleaner in where the cable was, moved it in and out, then about 8 drops of oil while moving it back and forth. I put it all back together, connected the battery and so far the key turns back to the 0 position like a hot knife going thru butter.
I'll try to post 5 pics with some text, never did that on this forum before.
Next I'm going to make a contribution to this site.
Thank for all the help to everyone.
If any of you need any E39 BMW 5 Series (1996-2003) help, let me know.
