Replacing Heated Side Mirrors 850 1997

Hi,

Is it very difficult to replace the side heated mirrors? Do they just pop out some how? Are there directions posted anywhere?

The passenger side heated mirror stopped defrosting, but then from time to time it starts to work. Now the diver's side stopped working. I'm assuming it the heating element. But, can the switch ever cause a problem like this?

Thank you.

Michael

The switch may fail, but I doubt it. The mirrors do fail.
To remove the glass, adjust the mirror to the far outside position, enough to get your fingers behind it. Then with one hand ready to catch the glasss, force the mirror straight out. The 2 wires will hold the mirror if you slip.

Then take a multimeter and check the voltage in the wires with the switch on, it should have voltage.

      Hi,

I should have included this in my original post. The rear-window does defrost, even though the two side mirrors seem to be intermittent, so the switch does seem to be somewhat functional, but not sure if it could fail to control the heated side mirrors, but work fine on the rear window.

      Thanks.

        Hi,

Another update. As I mentioned before, the rear defroster works every time. But now, the driver's side heated mirror stopped working. So now both mirrors have an issue. But.....The driver's side mirror started working again. Not sure if it will keep working or not. The right side still isn't working. So now, both heated mirrors work intermittently.

Is it possible that the heating elements can work intermittently like this? Or, is it possible the switch is bad?

        Thank you,

        Michael

If the rear window works, the switch is OK. Yes, the heating elements are affected by temperature, so they can work when the temperatures are perfect.

When removing the mirrors, what are the chances that the mirror (or it's mount) will be broken?

This is my second winter without heated mirrors (such a tragedy, I know), but I've not been bold enough to just go prying them off. I don't want to break the mirror mounts or power adjuster just to find out the problem lies elsewhere.

      Thanks,
      Will

You cannot break the center mount as you will see after the glass is out. It doesn't require a lot of force to pop the mirror out.
Don't put the right side mirror back upside down, the writing will drive you nuts!!! :)

Replacing Heated Side Mirrors Glases 850 1997

          Hi,
the mirror fix is round, dia about 15cm, it has 4 guide taps and 8 lock clips on the back of the glas. i used a sharp knife pushed into the joint to help the power applied by fingers to get the first clips bend. even this way the power needed on fingers is considerable and one is afraid to break the glas.

If you have the possibility to work in warm garage it is a benefit as cold plastic breaks more easily.
The weak point is the heating cable connector joint with the heating element inside the glas plastic and it usually connects momentarily when bending the connector, never been able to repair tough.
