We get very little talk around here about the S/V40. Maybe that means they don't have problems? Or more likely their owners don't hang around here much. From what I can gather the S/V40 is a bit of an outlier among the FWD "modern" Volvos. It shares a platform with a Mitsubishi and has four lug wheels. The engine is a derivative of the five and six cylinder "whiteblock" engines found in the 850/S/V70 and S80 models. To my eyes, the S/V40 are the least "Volvo" Volvo of the pre-Ford era.
That's not to say that it's not a great car though! I looked into the V40, but abandoned looking for them when I realized that the V70 gave similar fuel economy and cost less, in addition to being bigger on the inside.
Happy Hunting!
