Blown Head Gasket 850

I posted the question about the ECT sensor/sending unit yesterday.

To add to the my saga (nightmare):

I bench tested my old ECT vs. the new one. The ohms readings were almost identical. I tried to start it tonight and it sounded strange cranking. Pulled the cover and found

Cyl 1 70 psi
cyl 2 130
Cyl 3 90
Cyl 4 150
Cyl 5 140

How can I further determine if I have a blown head gasket. Almost certain the vehicle overheated with daughter driving it. No sign of water in oil or oil in coolant. No external leaks. Started it yesterday and it seem to run ok. Didn't drive it very far though.

Any ideas on the cost at in indy??

Thanks,
Hawk

I just posted about my head gasket replacement. I paid $1250, but I also got a second quote of $1900 (that included valve job), I went with the lower price (no valves). both were indy shops.

There are two things you can do to see if the gasket is bad: 1) borrow a boroscope, it can 'see' if you have coolant in the oil, 2) have the cooling system pressure tested (they blow air thru it, and if there are bubbles in the oil, then you got a bad head), it'll cost you about $100-$150.

Good luck, and post what you find out.

The only real way to determine if the head gasket is blown is to have the engine pressure tested.

Your compression numbers should be 185 to 213psi for a non-turbo and 156 to 185 psi for the turbo engines. Your numbers are really bad if you did the test right.

Did the new temp sending unit correct the position of the temp unit?

    Adding to my own post.

Started the car finally and it ran fine. The check engine light stayed off (yeah) I had the fan unhooked because I know it is bad, noisey, little motor smoking.

Here is the strange thing. I could not help but compression test my engine again.

ALL CYLINDERS WERE between 175 and 185.

Maybe my head gasket is fine after all??

Klaus, hope you are not laughing too loud.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

Just a little snicker :) You cannot compression test this engine while it is cold. Not all of the hydraulic lifters have been pumped up and your valves are not completely closed.
Nice compression numbers, by the way.

Replace the fan, now! and the ECT sensor, and the thermostat just for kicks. Give the car a nice oil flush and drive it a little before you give the car back.

Thanks for the advice. I was relieved with the better, more consistant numbers when the engine was warm. Alway seem to learn something, maybe that's what makes it fun.

        thanks Klaus,
        Hawk
