spoiler screw is impossible to get out 850 1995

I am painting my 850 T5-R and noticed that the spoiler brackets are rusted through. They were barely holding so I decided to take the spoiler off and get new brackets from the dealer. The 2 screws on each side are badly rusted and the heads are totally stripped AND they are super tight.

Do I NEED to use these brackets or is 3M double sided tape good enough?

Thanks, Nick

Sticky tape is NOT sufficient; You'll probably lose your spoiler on the Interstate while I'm following you! (the tape dries out)

The brackets are essential. Suggest you drill and extract the bolts with an E-Z out. Replacements available at dealer, boneyard, or parts supply.

    good luck.

Thanks for the response. I tried the ez out and it just rounded the screw even more. I also tried cutting little notches in the screws and using a flathead screwdriver instead of the torx but that didn't work either. I might have to get a new spoiler.

Penetrating oil, soak, more penetrating oil.

My Jeep had a torx screw holding up the windshield bracket, the screw (T40) was totally rusty and wouldn't budge, even with an easy out and lots of drilling. I tried everything you did.
I finally drilled a very small dent near the outside of the screw head and then used a punch and hammer to move the head counter clockwise. That worked to break the screw loose and the rest was "easy".

I've never really known an E-Z out to fail if you drill them deeply enough...you only need a narrow one.. If need be, you can drill out the body (shafts)of the bolts completely, and pull out the remnants with needle nose pliers. You really shouldn't need to replace the spoiler, but you DO want to use the brackets.

As a worst case -if he drills out a little too much, can he re tap and use a slightly bigger bolt?

The spoiler is plastic or fiberglass with only a metal threaded sleeve where the screw goes in. I got out the tap set then re-thought the idea and decided against it. I didn't want to drill and tap due to fear of making the sleeve too thin. The screws are out now thanks to Klaus.

Assuming the 850 R spoiler is anything like the spoiler on my GLT, the attachment screws are definitely "screws", not "bolts". Think screw like what attaches the knee bolster to the dash, that sort of thing.

Thankfully I've not had occasion to remove mine, as the screws look rusty and nasty. Once extracted it may not be too hard to reinstall with similar size screws, perhaps a little bigger. Stainless replacement screws are a must!

            -Will
