Volvo 850 Ticking (for only 5 mins) 850 1994

Most Mornings I start my car, idle 30 seconds then drive a short distance to the store to get a coffee. I leave it running while I'm in the store and usually when I get out of the store I can hear a ticking (which I noticed to increase in noise when I rev the engine. This ticking worries me, However as soon as (or a little before) the car is up to temperature It stops. When I get to work I notice that the ticking is gone. Is it a lifter that is gunked up from sitting at night? or is it something else.

Please let me know and How to fix. Thanks.

Sounds like an hydraulic lifter is slightly gunked with sludge. Because the noise goes away after getting the rpm up, it will not harm the engine. The lifter will not need to be replaced, very expensive to do anyway.

I suggest using synthetic engine oil, a Mann filter or OEM, and not letting it idle at the store while you get your coffee.

Depending on your use, the oil pickup lines in the bottom of the sump "may" have O rings that need replacement. Remember, running the engine at low rpms around town will increase the likelyhood of sludge due to the oil never heating up enough - especially true for turbo engines which have an oil cooler.

I was just making sure that's what it was. Sounded like it to me.
What is the opinion on a Lucas oil additive for this car? It has pretty high miles.

Thanks,

My reccomendation for removing sludge is AutoRx. Follow the directions on the can/bottle.

Most oil additives for "older" engines contain a thickener so that the rings seal better. Volvo engines never need this, the rings and cylinders are mated very well and seldom wear.
