TSB for loose clutch slave

This weekend I flushed brake fluid and also flushed the fluid

to the clutch salve (at the transmission) on my S70 T5M. When

I went to open the bleed valve at the clutch slave the entire

unit rotated about 45 degrees and moved a bit. The entire

component is not well secured. Pushing it down seems to have

resulted in better clucth feel (less "chatter" when starting).

I think I read about a TSB that describes a bracket to better

hold the slave in place which provides better clutch feel.

But, I can't recall if that is the case. Does anyone know

of such a TSB and parts and procedure for securing the slave

a bit better?

Ray, where is the clutch slave? I did a brake fluid flush in the summer, but didn't bother with the clutch, since I could not find it very easily and I figured that there was not that much fluid in there. Still, it'd be nice to know where it is and how best to get to it for the next time. BTW, I uset the Power Bleeder from Motive Products, what an amazingly simple and useful device! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do a brake fluid flush themselves. It makes the job absolutely easy, fun even.

As far as campaign 92 is concenred, Alldata states that the TSB is for MY98 N/A models. Not sure if same applies to T5s.

The slave is on the front of the engine right in front of the

fan. Have someone push in the clutch while you look at the

slave just to see how it works.

The bleeder valve faces the passenger side. Disconnect

the battery before putting your hand down there near the fan.

I think it is a 7mm bleed valve. I messed it up the first

time and got some air in it (clutch pedal went straight to the

floor). I had used a larger piece of tubing then I used on the

brakes and I think it leaked some air back into the slave

(the hardest part of the job is getting the tubing over the

bleed nipple). A second shot at it worked fine and the clutch

does feel better now (quite a bit smoother now).

I also have a Power Bleeder and to flush the clutch on the second

try I just topped up the brake fluid resevoir and hooked up

the Power Bleeder and pressurized it (no need to put fluid in

the Power Bleeder). This works cause you can see the brake

resevoir while bleeding the clutch. I also only used about 8

PSI so it went slow.

One thing, when you go to loosen the bleeder valve the entire

slave unit will probably rotate and move a bit. Same thing

when you close it up (I guess that is why they have the bracket

kit available). Just be ready for it since you don't want to

slip and drop your 7mm wrench when trying to close it.

Thanks, Ray. I'll give it a look-see, but will probably leave it alone for now.

Should I ask my dealer to look into this TSB? Does every clutch slave cylinder in '98 need this reinforcement bracket? What are the symptoms?

Symtoms are difficult clutch engagement and I think some

gear grinding could occur since the clucth may not be

fully disengaged. I had a lot of chatter starting in

first but that has improved since the flush/bleed.

I think this is the one you are looking for. It is called "campaign No. 92 - clutch control cylinder." It involves replacing the current coupling that you mentioned with an adapter kit. Hope that helps.
