ABS/TRACS Dash Lights V70-XC70 1998

These light appear once in a while on the dash. They may stay on for awhile or be off as soon as I start moving (thus hard to catch with a OBD-II code reader by the mechanic). I'm aware of the ABS module (expensive) may cause this. My question is this, are there things I can check first before I go through this expense, just in case it is a simple problem?

Thank you,

Karl

    Re: ABS/TRACS Dash Lights V70-XC70 1998

In my case, it took a top level mechanic to cross reference the meaning of several codes to determine my identical problem (it was the processor). But the codes would alternately suggest a sensor, the switch, etc. If *I* were doing my own repair and I wanted to conserve money in a recession, I'd go to a Volvo dismantler (not a boneyard) to try to get one out of a low mileage brick.

-maybe 20 years ago but for many years now ECUs store codes in memory, so if there was a problem, a code is still stored now and stays until cleared.

It's most likely the ECU as little else fails in recent years and ABS ECUs are a very common problem.

Does anyone know of the 'failure mode' for the abs ecu? In my experience, whenever there is a high failure rate of an electronic module, it's almost always a single cause (and usually easy to repair for an electronics tech) The only catch is whether there is a proprietary chip involved. Usually, though, it's something simple like failed solder joints. Especially likely if the problems are intermittent.

Let me know if you have a dead ECU and a bit of time and interest...

        Re: ABS/TRACS Dash Lights 850 1997

My understanding is that the problem is usually intermittent and related to hairline cracks/dry solder joints rather than failure of any single component.

If I had a "dead" module and were willing to replace it anyway, I'd happily spend an afternoon at the soldering station to try repairing it.

(That may not be so far away... for the first time last month, I saw the ABS/TRACS light come on for a day)

          Not so easy...... 850 1997

After reading the resoldering idea before here, I've since disassembled a failed ABS ECU to check just how feasable this might be. The unit is not made to be taken apart, it's glued so it must be cut opened with a saw to seperate it. Once opened, there's a 1/8"-1/4" layer of a gel type coating over its circuit board so although probably not totally impossible, I wouldn't consider repairing one of these an easy job for an amateur, like one who dables in trying to resolder other, much simpler relays. The unit isn't made to be repaired IMHO.
