If it were the position sensor, there would be a code. How do you know that there is no spark ? Do you hear a hum when you turn the key to position 2 ? That should be the fuel pump charging the fuel rail. Check for fuel pressure at the valve at the left side of the fuel rail. It could be a defective fuel pump relay 103 located under the fuse box cover. Take out the four screws that hold the cover an you will find it. It could also be the fuel filter. Do you know when it was last changed ? It could also be the fuel pump.
I had a no start problem with my XC but it did show a code for the cam position sensor. I found a lot of corrosion under the sensor cover that ruined the sensor. Good Luck!!! RK
