Volvo Starter grabs intermitently. 850

Whenever I leave my car sit for more than 8 hours the starter needs to be "joged" to engage. What I mean is I have to turn the key to start then back it off then it will turn the motor on the second try. Sometimes it starts right on the second try and sometimes it takes 10 or 15 try's. I can hear the starter engage and spin but it is not "biting" the gear on the motor until it's "joged"
Anyone heard of this? What might the solution be?

Also The starter and solenoid have been replaced. This still happens.

I would say, have this taken care of sooner rather than later.

Because the starter pinion is not fully engaging in the flexplate (I assume you have an automatic transmission), the pinion is likely doing damage to the gearteeth on that flexplate.

Typically, the pinion is made of a slightly softer material than the flexplate gearteeth, so it should be damaged far more than the flexplate. But all too often, like the $400 alternator that protects the 20-cent fuse, the flexplate sustains damage anyway.

And changing the flexplate involves separating the transmission from the engine, whereas correcting the problem with the starter motor is a much cheaper fix.

    So get this fixed soon.

what do you think I should do to take care of this.

      Thank you,

Check the voltage, as Klaus suggests. If that is okay, just replace the starter and be done with it.

So many times I read posts about people who have problems with their 850, but have managed a work-around, and live with the problem for extended periods. The point of my original response was that living with this problem is most assuredly going to further damage your car. Given the declining values of our cars, a repair requiring spliting the engine and transmission may doom the car. So fix the problem before it gets to that point.

Sounds like the good old days in my VW beetle. But you recently replaced the starter and solenoid? The solenoid has a spring that engages the teeth to the flywheel, it needs voltage to do that. Once the solenoid has moved enough, the starter motor is given voltage and it spins.
I would check the voltage to the solenoid, there could be a crack in the wire from the battery to the starter.

Its true i did think about checking up on all the wires to the starter. The starter spins no matter what the its just the engagement to the flywheel that has issues. Also, my new solenoid has two places to plug the green wire whereas the old one had only one and I just plugged it into the first one and it spun up. Changing the lead from one to the other makes not difference.

      Thanks, Any other ideas?

I had a Honda that the starter started "going out" on. It would either make a horrible grating noise and not start, or start perfectly fine. It finally died on me when we got about 5 inches of snow one morning. It turned out when I went to change the starter that the spring to engage the solenoid had just gotten twisted and broken, so it would only partially engage & chewed up some of the teeth on my flywheel from where it had been grating against it. So I guess what I'm saying is that even though you changed it, it could still have a bad solenoid/spring combination that only engages sometimes.
