Volvo Starter grabs intermitently. 850

I would say, have this taken care of sooner rather than later.

Because the starter pinion is not fully engaging in the flexplate (I assume you have an automatic transmission), the pinion is likely doing damage to the gearteeth on that flexplate.

Typically, the pinion is made of a slightly softer material than the flexplate gearteeth, so it should be damaged far more than the flexplate. But all too often, like the $400 alternator that protects the 20-cent fuse, the flexplate sustains damage anyway.

And changing the flexplate involves separating the transmission from the engine, whereas correcting the problem with the starter motor is a much cheaper fix.

So get this fixed soon.
