OBD-II readout system for all codes, not just engine 850 1997

Have just moved to Norway with my 97 850 turbo wagon. Volvo shop prices here are even worse than in the US. Is there any OBD-II read-out system on the market (for either a laptop PC, MacIntosh, or separate) that I can use to access ALL codes, not just those relating to the engine? Have looked at those in Schucks and Checkers before I moved, for around $400, but they are mostly just for engine. Dick

Check http://www.obd-2.com. However, as far as I know, no generic OBD-2 scanner will read all the codes. The reason is that OBD allows custom codes on top of the minimum mandated in the standard and the custom codes are accessible only through proprietary equipment.

    Hope it helps.

That's not strictly true; if the tool designer knew the codes, then they could access them, too.

Strictly speaking, OBD-II allows extensions to the protocol, and those extensions need not be published. Thus, only people with information on the extensions can create tools to read and interpret them. Often, this means the manufacturers and their licensees.

The excuse given by manufacturers for NOT turning over this information is for the consumers' protection because some of the codes/commands can cause damage to vehicular systems. The software in the cars is not designed to prevent stupidity or misuse, and so they only want educated personnel to have access to those features.

I've had conversations with the fellow from obd-2.com and he said that if we can get him a way to purchase a volvo scanner, he'd do it and start adding stuff to the software. Anybody know how this could happen?

I bought the software from OBD-2. It is great but only generic codes available. Although you can turn of your service light with his software, only one that does this. He told me in 6 mos he would add more volvo specific codes.

        Chris,

You mention a good point, "The software in

        > the cars is not designed to prevent stupidity or misuse," I have always preached that much care should be taken when inputting codes for say re-setting the service lamp or check engine lamp. It took me awhile to fully understand and appreciate what can be done with the DLCs found on earlier models. After understanding (reading Volvo manuals) the different test modes and techniques for both reading and inputting codes, it became obvious that a careless input, could put you in the wrong test mode, thus changing things like how your transmission behaves to resetting the instrument panel.
