Lower Ball Joints Worn at 90K 850 1995

I just left my car in a repair shop for inspection. They lifted it and found that the lower ball joints are seriously worn. They let me look at them and move the front wheels by myslef. Scary!!! I had many cars and only saw this kind loose ball joint in my Russian car.

Is this reasonable to expect this failure at 90K and "pothole dense" NYC roads?

They quoted some $300 for parts and labor. Is this normal? Is replacing ball joints a DIY job?

This is the first big ticket failure in the car since I bought it a year and a half and 26K miles ago.

Yuri

In my S70, the ball joint and lower control arm are a single piece. My indy tech would charge me 1/3 less for the job. Your link rod ends should need changing, too. (This is easy and cheap.)

Re: Lower Ball Joints Worn at 90K 850 1994

i had both of mine replaced at 96k as well as hub bearings. and now at 101k, there is a clunk in the suspension. not quite sure what it is, but i don't have the money to take it to a shop. it was there about 3k ago and i put new springs on it 300miles ago, and it is still there, i know that owuld not solve it, but i wanted a better handling car.

Clunk could be link rod ends. These are pretty cheap, and a DIY job.

What is the proper name of these link rods? How do I check if mine are worn? I saw one rubber boot ripped, but there seem to be no grease inside, all plastic.

How easy is to replace these? Are they the same on the left and right side?

It seems like at 91K front suspension needs some attention.
