What's the rub? Ongoing tire saga 850 94

First, thanks to those who responded to my Falken tire message. The 94 850 T wagon I bought is currently riding on 205/55/16 BFG Comp TA VR4 tires with stock suspension/rims and there is evidence of rubbing in the wheel wells. Since 2 of the tires are pretty worn, I was planning on going with a full set of a 205/50/16 size tire that originally came on the car. I'm confused by what caused the tire rubbing in the first place. Is it the .8" height difference between the 2 tires? More flex in the taller 55 series tire? Most manufacturers info has the 2 tires with almost identical section width so I don't think that would be it.

Moving on, has anyone tried a 225/50/16 tire on stock 16x6.5 rims with stock suspension?

Thank you,

Bert

Re: What's the rub? Ongoing tire saga 850 94

You should check out the link at Volvospeed outlining your exact problem. Basically, the reason those 205/55/16s rub on the inside of the wheelwells is because of the increased diameter. So you've pretty much answered it yourself. That 0.8" increase is enough to cause some rubbing when you're at or near full steering lock. Just goes to show you how little room the 850's wheelwells have.

Re: What's the rub? Ongoing tire saga V70-XC70 1998

For what it's worth, I purchased new tires and new wheels. I found that the weld on the inside (steel wheels) had a bubble on it that was rubbing up against the caliper. Needed to file it down.
